Shelter and Care Program

Improving Housing Conditions for the Elderly & Disadvantaged Families.
At GEEP Kenya, we recognize that a safe and decent home is a fundamental right for everyone, yet many elderly individuals and disadvantaged families live in abject poverty, facing inadequate housing that leaves them vulnerable to numerous health risks and challenges. These individuals often live in homes that are in poor condition, with dilapidated structures, lack of basic amenities, and unsafe environments that make them susceptible to diseases and discomfort.
In response to this, our Shelter and Care Program was established to address the critical housing needs of the elderly and marginalized families. We aim to improve living conditions by constructing decent and durable homes that provide a sense of safety, dignity, and well-being for those who need it most.
Targeting Vulnerable Populations
Our program specifically focuses on:
• Elderly individuals who are often neglected or abandoned, living in homes that do not provide the necessary shelter or protection from the elements.
• Disadvantaged families struggling to make ends meet, living in substandard housing that lacks proper sanitation, security, and protection from the environment.
• Children in need of care and protection, as unstable housing can impact their growth, education, and overall well-being.
Key Components of the Shelter and Care Program
- Constructing Decent Homes We are committed to improving the living conditions of the elderly and disadvantaged families by constructing semi-permanent or permanent houses. These homes are designed to be:
- Durable, with the use of affordable, locally-sourced building materials that stand the test of time.
- Safe, with proper foundations, roofing, and walls that protect against harsh weather conditions, floods, and other environmental hazards.
- Accessible, especially for elderly individuals and families with special needs, ensuring that homes are tailored to meet specific accessibility requirements, such as ramps and wide doorways.
- Upgrading Existing Homes In addition to new constructions, we also undertake the renovation and upgrading of existing homes for families and elderly individuals. This may involve:
- Strengthening structural integrity to prevent collapse or further deterioration.
- Improving sanitation facilities, such as installing new toilets, sinks, and access to clean water.
- Upgrading roofing and repairing walls to prevent leaks, mold, and other health hazards.
- Basic Amenities We ensure that homes are equipped with basic amenities that promote health, hygiene, and comfort. These include:
- Clean water supply: Ensuring homes have access to safe drinking water, which is essential for maintaining hygiene and health.
- Improved sanitation: Installing safe and functional toilets and waste management systems to prevent the spread of diseases and promote better hygiene practices.
- Electricity and lighting: Providing basic lighting to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents in homes, particularly for elderly residents.
- Community Involvement We believe that sustainable solutions come from community involvement. Our approach includes:
- Engaging local communities in the construction and renovation process, offering training in construction skills, empowering local workers, and contributing to local economies.
- Collaborating with local leaders and community organizations to identify the most vulnerable families and elderly individuals in need of shelter.
- Creating awareness about the importance of good housing, health, and safety within communities to encourage proactive measures toward improving living conditions.
Program Goals and Impact
Improved Living Conditions: Our primary goal is to ensure that elderly individuals and disadvantaged families live in homes that are safe, clean, and conducive to good health. This reduces the risk of diseases that are often linked to poor housing conditions, such as respiratory infections, vector-borne diseases, and waterborne diseases.
• Enhancing Dignity and Security: By providing decent housing, we aim to restore the dignity of the elderly and marginalized families, offering them a sense of security and stability, which is essential for mental and emotional well-being.
• Promoting Health and Well-being: Safe and decent housing is a cornerstone of good health. By addressing housing issues, we reduce the exposure of vulnerable populations to environmental hazards that could otherwise lead to serious health issues.
• Economic Empowerment: By involving local communities in the construction and renovation of homes, we provide employment opportunities and skills development, thereby contributing to local economic growth.
• Supporting Sustainable Communities: We work to create sustainable housing solutions that can be maintained and improved by the communities themselves, fostering a sense of ownership and long-term sustainability.
Long-Term Vision
Through our Shelter and Care Program, we are committed to ensuring that no elderly individual or disadvantaged family has to endure substandard living conditions. By providing homes that are safe, comfortable, and health-promoting, we are laying the foundation for healthier, more stable communities. Our goal is to:
• Empower families and the elderly to thrive in their homes.
• Improve public health outcomes by reducing the risks associated with poor housing conditions.
• Contribute to the achievement of SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by fostering inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities for all.
With this program, we aim to provide more than just a house — we aim to provide a home that restores hope and provides a platform for a better future.
